What to Pack for a Boat Ride

Updated: Oct 29, 2023

Are you planning an outdoor adventure on a boat? Before you hit the waves, pack all the essentials for your day out. Don't worry - it doesn't have to be complicated! We have some tips and tricks on what items are essential to bring with you and things that could be useful while spending time on the water. Whether fishing or cruising, we'll help ensure your day is safe and enjoyable!

Boat Ride

Boat Ride Safety Gear

Safety should always be the top priority when boating, so bring all the necessary items unless the boat captain provides them. This includes a personal floatation device (PFD) for each person on board, flares, a fire extinguisher, and a horn or whistle in case of an emergency. Other helpful items might include extra life vests, flashlights, and batteries in case of darkness while out on the water. If you're like me, you always need diphenhydramine (Benadryl) and a first aid kit.

Sun Protection

Nothing ruins a boat ride quicker than sunburns and dehydration. Bring plenty of sunscreens (SPF 30 or higher) and sunglasses for everyone aboard to prevent this. You may also want to consider getting hats or umbrellas for extra protection from the sun's rays, especially if you're planning an extended cruise.

Comfortable Clothing & Footwear

I can't tell you how often I've left the shore with the sun out and returned shivering later that evening. Regardless of the weather, make sure to wear comfortable clothing and shoes. Long pants and closed-toe shoes are highly recommended for protection from the sun and any debris or sharp objects in the water. Also, please bring a few extra layers if it gets chilly during your journey.

Food & Drinks

Finally, don't forget to bring along food and drinks for the crew. Pack non-perishable items such as chips, crackers, and other snacks in addition to a cooler full of water or your favorite beverage. If you or someone on board suffers from motion sickness, ginger chews, and ginger ale are necessary! You may also want to consider bringing a small stove and cookware if you plan on preparing hot meals during your outing.

By preparing beforehand, you'll be able to enjoy an enjoyable day out on the boat with friends or family without any surprises! Please bring plenty of water and other beverages to keep everyone hydrated during their voyage.
